Indonesia. Saman dance is officially on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO
Saman Dance from Aceh has been officially included in the UNESCO list of world intangible cultural heritage. Gusti Ngurah I Putra director of the Center for Public Communication Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, told reporters Thursday that the decision to appoint the Saman dance was taken at the 6th session of Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Intangible Cultural held on 22 November 29, 2011 in Nusa Dua, Bali.
He said, “in the session,” the dance of Gayo Lues Saman and surrounding areas in Aceh province was officially included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO `s urgent need of safeguarding.”
The UNESCO meeting was participated by around 500 representatives from 69 countries, international NGOs, cultural experts and media.
The sixth meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage was officially opened by the Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare Mr. Agung Laksono in the presence of the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, the Minister of Education, Culture, Muhammad Nuh , The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Elka Pangestu, Deputy Director General for Culture of UNESCO `s Francesco Bandarin.
Agung Minister expressed appreciation for the inclusion of the Saman dance from the list of intangible cultural world heritage.
Recognition of the Saman dance by UNESCO should become the beginning of efforts to preserve and promote dance Saman said.
Saman dance originated in Gayo Lues and surrounding areas in the province of Aceh. It was created by a tribe of Gayo in the 13th century and then was developed to convey religious messages by Saman Syeh.
Saman dance shows very dynamic and interesting movements harmonious sounds without the aid of any musical instrument. In dance, the performers sit cross-legged or kneeling, side by side in a straight line. They wear traditional clothes Gayo symbols of nature and noble values. In the past, all the dancers were men and Saman were always odd number. (Center for Public Communication).
