South American countries seek crisis between Ecuador and the United Kingdom
South American countries treat this Sunday, August 19, the diplomatic crisis between Ecuador and the United Kingdom for the case of Australian journalist Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks.
The Foreign Ministry of Peru, which holds the rotating presidency of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), said Thursday that its members called a special meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers to assess this critical situation.
The foreign ministers’ meeting was requested by Ecuador, which denounced the British government’s threats to enter the embassy, where refugee Assange, and has received political asylum in compliance with international agreements.
Earlier British Foreign Secretary William Hague said his government will not allow the output of Assange British territory, which provoked the reaction of the Ecuadorian government.
The defense of Assange expressed fears that the British government to extradite man press to Sweden, where he faces charges of alleged sexual offenses.
But, according to the defense the real intention is that once in Sweden, will be extradited to the United States where he faces a spreading process on its website Wikileaks thousands of secret documents from the U.S. government.
Assange asylum, defending Ecuador and UNASUR will be discussed by this Sunday, is based on the United Nations Charter and the Vienna Convention, which guarantees the international measure.
