Elected president of African Union Commission

Addis Ababa.- The election of a president of the African Union Commission is one of the main issues addressed here today as part of the XIX Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.

For that office presented the nomination of Gabon, Jean Ping, who aspires to continue in office, and the current South African Minister of the Interior, Nkosozana Dlamini-Zuma.

Neither candidate got in the last session of the AU, held in January, two thirds of ballots needed for the new term on the Commission.

It was learned, among other topics to be discussed the meeting of Heads of State and Government of 54 countries in Africa is the situation of political instability in Mali and Guinea Bissau, both territories scenarios of military coups.

Also examine the conflict between Sudan and South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes region, together with the strengthening of intra-African trade.

In this forum, which ends tomorrow, the leaders also adopted the AU budget for 2013, amounting to more than 280 million dollars, for defense and security issues and aid programs in the region.

The day before the meeting concluded here the Executive Council of the African Union, comprising Foreign Ministers, which approved the draft agenda of the summit mainland.
